Tanswell’s Hotel is Beechworth’s oldest surviving hotel, dating back to 1852, originally built after gold was discovered. In 1871 Thomas Tanswell, a convict transported to Australia in 1833, added a second level to the hotel and dubbed it “Tanswells Commercial Hotel”.
